Armin Mersmann - Contemporary Drawings
A nationally recognized artist, Armin Mersmann has work in more than 350 corporate, public and private collections. He was named a Top 100 American Portrait Artist by Artist Magazine in 1990 and 1994. Known for his intense naturalistic graphite drawings, he describes his work as narrative and symbolistic. Both collective and personal, Mersmann’s work deals with the evidence of humankind’s existence through artifacts. His drawings react to man’s preoccupation with cheating death and creating representative objects, tokens and icons in an attempt to achieve immortality.

Mersmann’s Contemporary Drawings exhibit will be on display from January 23 through February 28, 2010 at the John P. Weatherhead Gallery in the Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center on Leesburg Road. The opening reception will be held on January 23 from 7 to 9 p.m.

This is theater at its simplest: two actors read the letters exchanged over a lifetime by two characters. These two are, in their own way, as star-crossed as Romeo & Juliet. In a novel presentation each performance a different husband and wife acting couple will give life to this evocative, touching and frequently funny piece. Rated: R.

I Have Before Me A Remarkable Document Given to Me by A Young Lady from Rwanda
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! all for One’s alternative theatre piece to beat last year’s mid-winter blahs is reprised in response to the desire of 2009 audiences. I HAVE BEFORE ME A REMARKABLE DOCUMENT GIVEN TO ME BY A YOUNG LADY FROM RWANDA, by Sonja Linden is a provocative and timely two-character drama. This surprisingly funny meeting of two cultures introduces us to Juliette, a young Rwandan refugee living in London, and Simon, a middle-aged struggling novelist assigned to help her with her English writing skills. As he encourages her to write her personal story, and she resists, we are drawn into the reality of tragedy and triumph for all those who have lived in war-torn countries. Rated PG-13 for subject matter.

Fort Wayne's Global Village, featuring the Fort Wayne Maennerchor and the Mon Community Dancers
The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis is hosting the Fort Wayne Maennerchor and the Mon Community Dancers in its final presentation of Fort Wayne’s Global Village on Stage—Celebrating Diversity in the Arts on Sunday, February 28 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the North Campus Auditorium, 2702 Spring Street. Admission is free. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. for general seating. Through a series of six unique performances, the university provides the local community an exclusive opportunity to experience the many cultures that Fort Wayne embodies.

The Mon Dancers were founded in 1993 to restore, maintain and promote Mon traditional dances in Fort Wayne. They have participated in many cultural shows including International Festival, Three Rivers Festival, Dance Explosion, and the Asian Festival. Twelve types of Mon Dance will be performed by the group followed by a solo dance.

The Fort Wayne Männerchor/Damenchor is dedicated to the preservation and cultivation of the German heritage of Fort Wayne as expressed in choral music. In existence for 139 years, the original members were all German and German speaking immigrants. Members today still include many German-born singers along with second or third generation Fort Wayne natives. Membership in the choir is open to all individuals interested in singing and participating in the German culture of essen, trinken, und gemütlichkeit (eating, drinking, and a jolly good time). Members enjoy celebrating traditional German events such as Oktoberfest, Fasching, and Schlachtfest.

These performances are made possible in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne.

The University of Saint Francis Jesters perform "DaisyJack"
The Jesters, a troupe of 35 actors and artists with special needs ranging in ages from 11 to 69, will perform DaisyJack on Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, March 7 at 3 p.m. at the university’s North Campus Auditorium, 2702 Spring Street. The ticket price for this performance is $10.

DaisyJack is an original story about everyday people searching for the place where they belong. In this multi-media family-oriented production, Daisy and Jack are fallen stars who don’t remember who they are. Guided by the magical Menehunes, they travel through emotional landscapes, hide from the Evil Queens and encounter the Super Heroes as they try to find their way home. Daisy and Jack watch through their “windows” as the story unfolds through drama, rhythm, music, dance and visual arts.

The Jesters has been sponsored by the University of Saint Francis since its founding in 1978. The purpose of Jesters is to enhance quality of life for people with physical disabilities and/or developmental disabilities by engaging them in recreational opportunities designed to promote creative expression and positive social interaction.

You Can't Take It With You
The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis will perform You Can’t Take It with You, a Pulitzer Prize-winning comedic play in three acts by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, on March 19, 20, 26, and 27 at 8 p.m. and March 21 and 28 at 2 p.m. in the North Campus Auditorium (2702 Spring Street). Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10. Doors will open 30 minutes before show time for general seating.

In his New York Times review, Brooks Atkinson described You Can’t Take It with You as “a spontaneous piece of hilarity” composed with “a dash of affection to season the humor” by two writers with “a knack for extravagances of word and episode and an eye for hilarious incongruities.”

One of the most popular and successful plays of modern times, it tells the story of two families, the Sycamores and the Kirbys. At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores.
