Peter Turnley’s The Content of Our Character Debut Exhibition at the University of Saint Francis
The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis is pleased to host the premier exhibition of an original photo essay, The Content of Our Character, by award-winning photographer Peter Turnley, from July 11 through August 19. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Weatherhead Gallery of the Rolland Art Center off Leesburg Road.

After photographing Barack Obama campaigning in Ohio and documenting the reactions to the campaign by his neighbors in Harlem, photojournalist Peter Turnley boarded a bus in Brooklyn with a group of approximately 40 citizens from New York to witness the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

“I have been a photojournalist for the past 25 years and have had the incredible opportunity to witness many of the world’s defining moments of modern history: the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of Communism in Eastern Europe in 1989, the end of apartheid in South Africa and Nelson Mandela walking out of prison in 1991, and most of the world’s conflicts of the past three decades. When our bus pulled into Maryland on the eve of the inauguration, I knew after hearing the words of my fellow passengers—in some sense fellow pilgrims—that I was witnessing a moment of history like maybe no other in terms of its magnitude, certainly not in America.”
~ Peter Turnley

A Fort Wayne native who graduated from Elmhurst High School, Peter went on to study at the University of Michigan, the Sorbonne of Paris, the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris and also received a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard University for the 2000-01 academic year. Peter has photographed for the world’s most prestigious magazines including Newsweek, Stern, Paris Match, Geo, LIFE, National Geographic, The London Sunday Times, VSD, Le Figaro, Le Monde and DoubleTake. He has documented nearly every major news event of international significance, including the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 1989 revolutions in Eastern Europe; the end of apartheid in South Africa and the freeing of Nelson Mandela after 27 years in prison; the 1991 Gulf War; conflicts in the Balkans (Bosnia), Somalia, Rwanda, South Africa, Chechnya, Haiti, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and Kosovo; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the scene at “Ground Zero” on Sept, 11, 2001; and the Iraq War. His pictures have won many international awards, including the Overseas Press Club Award for best photographic reporting from abroad. He has published five books of his work: Beijing Spring, Moments of Revolution, In Times of War and Peace, and Parisians.

This exhibition is an affiliated event with the 2009 Three Rivers Festival.

Wizard of Oz Exhibit
Follow the story of Dorothy’s visit to the Land of Oz, as portrayed in the classic 1939 MGM film. From the faded tones of ordinary Kansas farm life, step into the bright colors of Munchkin Land.

You can follow the yellow brick road to meet the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly
Lion before reaching the Emerald City. Visit the Haunted Forest and Witch’s Castle (not too scary for the kids) before you find your heart’s desire.

Remember, there’s no place like home!

Interconnectivity, an exhibition by Chris Kahler
The University of Saint Francis, President Sister M. Elise Kriss and the School of Creative Arts present Interconnectivity, an exhibition by Chris Kahler, from August 29 through October 11, 2009, with an opening Presidential Gala on Saturday, August 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the John P. Weatherhead Gallery of the Rolland Art Center.

Represented by the St. Louis based Bruno David Gallery, Kahler’s artistic technique incorporates a variety of media including acrylic and oil-based paints on panel, canvas and paper. His large-scale paintings are abstract, expressive and extremely colorful. Interconnectivity is a concept that is used in numerous fields such as cybernetics, biology, ecology, network theory, and non-linear dynamics. The concept can be summarized as that all parts of a system interact with and rely on one another simply by the fact that they occupy the same system, and that a system is difficult or sometimes impossible to analyze through its individual parts considered alone. The concept is closely linked to the Observer Effect and the Butterfly Effect.

Chris Kahler received his BFA from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1991. During his junior year of college, he spent a semester abroad at Parson’s School of Art And Design and the American University in Paris, France. He then went on for an MA at Eastern Illinois University and an MFA from Northwestern University in 1995. He is currently an Associate Professor at Eastern Illinois University.

As the kickoff to the Closer Look Lecture Series, the school will also host an artist’s lecture by Kahler on Wednesday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Campus Auditorium. This program is presented in part by Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Waiting for Joshua
Drama, humor and surprise can be expected as nationally known writer-actor-directors, Stephen W. Baldwin and Jeffrey D. Querin of 34west Theater Company (NY & OH) present WAITING FOR JOSHUA. Baldwin and Querin are known for modernizing Biblical and classic stories and this dramatic musical is no exception. As the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho unfolds on battlefields in the early 20th century, the characters, reminiscent of Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby, begin to reflect our present, everyday lives while revealing the explosive power of God’s faithfulness. The public is invited to stay for an open discussion of faith and art following each performance. Rated G for all audiences.
